-게 하다

This grammar pattern is used when the subject makes someone else do something. It is used after a word stem.

● 동생이 자꾸 저를 화나게 해요.
● 못하게 하면 더 하고 싶어져요.

-고 말다

This grammar pattern is used to show final development of an action that can’t be restored. Usually, it’s used when the event is unplanned and unpleasant.

● 의사가 최선을 다했지만 결국 환자는 죽고 말았어요.
● 열심히 공부했는데 결국 시험을 망치고 말았군요.

-곤 하다

This grammar pattern is used when you want to mention something you’ve done repeatedly in the past(sometimes in the present). It’s used with a verb.

● 어렸을 때에는 밤마다 게임을 하곤 했어요.
● 옛날에는 스키를 즐겨 타곤 했는데 요즘에는 바빠서 못 타요.

 

-어/아/여 버리다

This grammar pattern is used to indicate the person has done something to completion, so that a certain burden is diminished or some negative feeling remains. It’s used with a verb.

● 오랫동안 밀렸던 빨래를 다 해 버렸어요.
● 친구들이 나를 기다리지 않고 먼저 가 버렸다.

-고 해서

This grammar pattern is used to show one reason out of many others. So, the reason is not the only one.

● 피곤하고 해서 그냥 집에 일찍 갔어요.

This grammar pattern is used when someone asks a question to reconfirm the statement of other person because it’s hard to believe. It is used after a word stem or a noun.

● 가 : 저는 사실 21살이에요.
나 : 그럼 저보다 동생이란 말이에요?

● 가 : 제 동생은 삼겹살을 혼자 5인분 먹어요.
나 : 그렇게 많이 먹는단 말이에요?

-으면/면 되다, -이면/면 되다

This grammar pattern is used when we talk about a simple condition or a easy solution. ‘되다’ means in this pattern ‘to be enough’. ‘-으면 되다’ i’s attached to the word stem ending in a consonant other than ‘ㄹ’ and ‘-면 되다’ is attached to the word stem ending in a vowel and ‘ㄹ’.

● 한 달 생활비는 30만 원이면 됩니다.
● 여기에다가 이름만 쓰면 돼요?

-다니, -이라니/라니
